Zanzibar was once internationally renowned as the Spice Islands, exporting cloves, vanilla, nutmeg and cardamom across the edges of the world. At one point 90% of the world’s entire clove supply was from Zanzibar, and even today Zanzibar is still a major exporter of spices. The foundations of the Spice Islands were planted predominantly during the era of Sultan Barghash. The spices were even brought from all over the world ranging from Asia to South America to be planted in the tropical isles lustrous climate, which allowed for spices to thrive.
