You will depart from your hotel and drive through Stone Town to visit the Darajani Market. Here, you will experience the hustle and bustle of morning activities. You will then proceed to the Anglican Church built in 1874 by Bishop Steer on the site of the Great Slave Market, once a hub of slave trade for the whole of East Africa. You will also have the opportunity to visit the underground chambers where the slaves were once held before being sold on the market.
Stone Town was the scene of the shortest war ever fought in history when the British army descended on the Sultan’s Palace 114 years ago to stop a sultan whom they considered unfriendly to their interests. The war lasted 36 minutes, and resulted in a victory for the British.
You will then drive past the House of Wonders, today a Museum and the Old Arab Fort en route to visit the Sultan’s Palace Museum, where the last Sultan ruled over Zanzibar prior to the 1964 revolution.
Thereafter, you will proceed to the village of Kizimbani in the center of the island. Here you will learn about the importance of nutmeg and cloves – the island’s two main spices. The villagers will also show you how they construct their mud houses and live their traditional lives in the village. (show you activities such as how coconut is extracted, henna painting, and other activities which they partake in.)
You will end your tour with a lunch stop at Jafferji House Hotel, iconically located in the centre of Stone Town.
