While spices no longer dominate Pemba’s economy as they once did, there are still numerous spice plantations scattered on the island which make an interesting visit. Friendly, knowledgeable and informative Tour Guides will escort you on a walking tour in the spice farms. This is a half day tour through Wete old road to Mtambwe village where you can see a variety of spices before visiting the oil distillery factory in Chake Town.
Pemba actually produces the majority of spices exported from Zanzibar. During a spice tour, expect to see cloves, lemongrass, cinnamon, cardamom, nutmeg, black pepper and vanilla. You will also visit the essential oil distillery to see how spices are made into oil.
Walk through the spice farm with your guide. Touch, smell and taste different spices and tropical fruits. Try to guess which is which, from the crushed leaves, the fruit, shoots and vines and creepers crawling up the trees. Learn about their properties, their origins and their use as medicines and in food, drink, and industry.
